Notable Achievements in Her Own Words

Part of my pedagogy is to show students that, although they may not have recognized it, they are already thinking spatially. For example, to make students aware of spatial similarities and differences in a familiar environment, students first are encouraged to freely talk about their hometowns. Subsequently, they are ask to deepen this discussion after gathering statistics on American Fact Finder. Only after these preliminary steps do I begin my lectures on GIS and present to them GIS lab exercises where they learn technical functionalities.

Presently, I am also working with an undergraduate student in political science whom I have taught some fundamentals of ArcMap to map racial data from the past presidential election. Our goal is to show outcomes by state and the resulting significance for African Americans.
