Which Workshop Should I Apply for?
The primary considerations are (a) background experience in GIS and methods of spatial analysis, (b) disciplinary focus of the workshop, (c) how much time you can commit to the course, and (d) cost of participation.
(a) Background experience:
- I have no prior familiarity with GIS or spatial analysis but I am familiar with standard statistical methods and quantitative reasoning, and I have a fair background of general computer literacy.
The workshop at UCSB will be most appropriate.
- I have a reasonable background in statistics. Although I am familiar with GIS and spatial analysis, I have little or no experience in using related software:
The workshops at UCSB or Ohio State University will be most appropriate.
- I have prior experience in uses of GIS and methods of spatial analysis.
The workshops at San Diego State University or at Ohio State University will be most appropriate.
- I have completed previous CSISS or ICPSR workshops on spatial analysis
If you completed the ICPSR Workshops with Luc Anselin or the CSISS Workshop on Spatial Pattern Analysis, then the SPACE Workshop at San Diego State University will be most appropriate.
(b) Discipline focus:
- The UCSB workshop will focus on multi-discipline perspectives of spatial analysis in the social sciences. Workshop projects will feature loose disciplinary clusters of participants working together.
- The Ohio State University workshop will be of most interest to social scientists that seek to incorporate spatial analyses of crime patterns, health service delivery, transportation, voting patterns, racial segregation, and other gender and ethnic issues within their undergraduate courses.
- The San Diego State University workshop will be of most interest to participants from sociology, criminology, demography, epidemiology, and health studies.
(c) Time commitment:
- The workshop at Ohio State University is for 5 full days
- The workshop at San Diego State University is for 5 full days in August 2004, plus a 2-to-3-day follow-up refresher in spring 2005 at a location to be designated
- The workshop at University of California, Santa Barbara is for two full weeks (10 workshop days plus the weekends).
(d) Cost of participation:
- There are no admission fees to participate in SPACE workshops.
- Your costs will be a function of how long the workshop lasts and the costs of meals and lodging, where the workshop is located relative to your home base, and any assistance you might secure over and above the subsistence scholarship from the SPACE program.
- The detailed descriptions of each workshop provide estimates of lodging costs; check with your travel agent or on the web for various travel options.
- Each of the workshops will provide one or two complimentary receptions and meals, but you will be responsible for covering lodging and all other meal costs.
