The workshop will be held at the UCSB campus, which is approximately 20 minutes west of downtown Santa Barbara and 5 minutes from downtown Goleta. (Campus and housing maps & directions).

Suggested Travel Itinerary

Arrive Santa Barbara, Sunday, 30 July
Depart Santa Barbara, Sunday, 6 August

The Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) airport, adjacent to UCSB, is served by the following airlines:

America West Airlines 1.800.235.9292
American Airlines (American Eagle) 1.800.433.7300
Delta Connection 1.800.221.1212
Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air 1.800.547.9308
United Express 1.800.241.6522

SBA is adjacent to UCSB. For more info, see www.flysba.com.

If you are staying on-campus in Manzanita Village (more info on this below), there is free shuttle service from and to the airport. Participants need only call the front desk at 805.893.6161 during regular office hours (7am-1am) upon arrival at the airport.

If you are staying elsewhere, we recommend taking the SuperRide shuttle - very convenient and less expensive than taxis ($15-18 one-way versus $22-24 for a taxi). There is usually a shuttle waiting at the airport for deplaning passengers (a large white van with "SuperRide" in big blue lettering), otherwise there is a courtesy phone in the baggage claim area. Also, it's convenient and a bit less expensive to schedule a round-trip with them. For more info, see www.superride.net.

Flying into Los Angeles International (LAX) airport: LAX is about a 2-hour drive south of Santa Barbara and is served by most major airlines and rental car companies. LAX website

As an alternative to renting a car, the Santa Barbara Airbus can take you from LAX to either downtown Santa Barbara or Goleta. They offer discounted rates for round-trips and pre-paid trips. For schedules, fares, and pick-up/drop-off locations, please see www.santabarbaraairbus.com.

Flying into Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena (BUR) airport: On the northern edge of the greater Los Angeles area, BUR is about 2 hours from Santa Barbara and is served by many major airlines and rental car companies. Airfares are usually comparable to LAX fares. See www.burbankairport.com for more information.

Accommodations

For your convenience, we have reserved a block of rooms with Manzanita Village. Opened in Fall 2002, Manzanita Village provides “no frills” residence hall style housing to UCSB students and visitors.

Each building has a laundry/vending room, a lounge with view terrace, and a study room. Some buildings are equipped with full kitchens. The rooms themselves have extra-long twin beds with linens provided, a closet, a desk, a built-in bookshelf, and a dresser. Internet access will be available at no extra charge. Hall bathrooms are shared among 4 rooms.

The one-week rate (7 days, 6 nights) is approximately $537 for a shared room, $655 for a private room. This includes a full meal plan (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner), linens, free shuttle service to/from SBA airport, and free campus parking. For additional information and on-line registration, please see the "UCSB Conference Services registration webpage". Registration deadline is June 28th.

Should you prefer alternative lodging, we encourage you to secure it as soon as possible. It can be difficult to find affordable hotel rooms in Santa Barbara during the summer. For hotel suggestions, please see UCSB Local Lodging or Accommodations in Santa Barbara. Off campus housing will require the use of public transportation to and from campus or, if travelling by car, the additional cost of parking fees ($7/day).

Workshop Class Location/Time

Please report to the first class on Monday, July 31, 9:00am at Ellison Hall, Room 2620.
