Suggested Travel Itinerary:
Arrive Santa Barbara, Sunday, 3 August
Depart Santa Barbara, Saturday, 9 August

The small Santa Barbara Airport is served by the following airlines:

American Eagle 1.800.433.7300
America West Express 1.800.235.9292
Delta Airlines 1.800.221.1212
Delta Connection 1.800.325.8224
Horizon Air 1.800.547.9308
United Express 1.800.241.6522

There is no UCSB shuttle from the SB airport to the campus housing (Santa Ynez Apartments).

>> Driving from LAX
The drive is approximately 2 hours from LAX to Santa Barbara (UCSB campus).

>> Directions to Santa Ynez Apartments
From northbound Highway 101, take the Los Carneros Road exit. Turn left (heading in a southerly direction). Los Carneros will dead-end into El Colegio. Turn right (heading west). Santa Ynez will be the apartments on your right.

>> Transportation recommendation --
from Santa Barbara Airport to the Santa Ynez Apartments
(6650 El Colegio Road, Goleta, California 93117) [Map]:
This is a very short ride from the airport to the apartments, and we recommend the SuperRide shuttle (683-9636) -- no advance reservations necessary -- very convenient and less expensive than taxis (usually large white van, big blue lettering on sides and top "SuperRide"). There is usually a shuttle waiting at the airport for deplaning passengers, so you may not need to call for service. If not, use the courtesy phone in the baggage claim area to call. Also, it's convenient and much less expensive if you schedule a round-trip. Bottom line: SuperRide is a better deal! (If SuperRide is unavailable, we recommend Blue Dolphin Taxi.)

Accommodations
Unless you state otherwise on your Information Request Form, we assume that each of you will accept our offer to stay in the UCSB-owned Santa Ynez Apartments, near the campus and within walking distance. The cost of the six-night stay (Sunday-Friday) is extremely reasonable at $287 per person. This amount will be deducted from your $500 CSISS scholarship, and the balance check ($213) will be remitted to you on-site at the close of the workshop. (Note: For non-U.S. citizens who do not have a Social Security number or an ITIN, the balance will be processed for you via a Travel Expense Voucher to be detailed later.)

>> Details are as follows:

  • Check-in time/date: begins 12 noon, Sunday, 3 August
  • Checkout time/date: must vacate by 12 noon, Saturday, 9 August
  • Place: Santa Ynez Apartment Complex
  • Address: 6650 El Colegio Road, Goleta, California 93117

These will be shared accommodations, two people per apartment (same sex in each apt.). Each 2-bedroom Santa Ynez Apartment is furnished with the following items:

  • Living and Dining Room - Couch and chair, dining table with four chairs, end table, and one lamp.
  • Bedrooms (2 per apt.) - Two single beds with full linen and bedding (only one blanket per bed is supplied), double closet, two desks with bookcases, and two dressers. Beds are made up once a week.
  • Kitchen - Refrigerator, stove, table service for four, including cutlery, cups, plates, and one tea kettle.
  • Bathrooms (1 and 1/2 per apt.) - Shower curtain, towels, washcloths, hand soap, and toilet paper. Towels are changed twice per week.
  • There is also an on-site fitness center and laundry facility.

>> Check-in at Santa Ynez Apartments: The front desk will be open for check-in very, very late on Sunday, 3 August. Check-in will remain open until at least 1 am, Monday morning. So no fear if you arrive late on Sunday evening.

>> Things to consider bringing:

  1. cell phone and/or calling card – Apartments do not have active phone lines or internet access.
  2. alarm clock
  3. extra clothes hangers (UCSB provides only a few)
  4. sweater or jacket!  Very important -- for our California coastal weather can be quite chilly, especially after sunset.

>> Meals are on your own -- with the exception of a Thursday evening BarBQ we will host at the BEACH!

>> Reminder: Payment for your lodging at Santa Ynez Apartments will be deducted from your $500 scholarship amount. Due to internal campus guidelines, CSISS must pay for your lodging internally. Therefore, we will subtract your lodging from your $500 scholarship, and at the close of the workshop, you will be given a check for the balance. Please contact LaNell Lucius if you have any questions about this procedure.

>> Early arrival or late departure
For early arrival on Sat. 8/2 or late departure on Sun. 8/10, please contact the Manzanita Guest House for additional lodging. This is "no frills" on-campus lodging especially for campus visitors that are conducting University business. Room rates are $55 per night. Payment is by Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit cards only. Campus Parking
Permits are required in all areas of campus Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. It will be helpful to stop at the kiosk (entry to campus) in order to receive parking information and maps. You will be provided instructions on where to park and how to use the self-pay machines. Short-term permits may be purchased for $7/day from the self-pay machines installed in each parking lot. (Kiosk personnel will not be able to handle parking fees or cash.) No permit is needed for the 30-minute metered spaces (but the meter must be fed). As a visitor, you will park in lots allowing "C" (commuter) parking.
More information can be found at the UCSB Transportation and Parking Services website: http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/visitor.html (click on commuter parking permit)
